West Virginia's Coal and Coke Railway: A B&O Predecessor
by Alan Clarke
Paperback, 186 pages
8.5 x 11
Locomotive and equipment rosters, statistical data, drawings, maps and rosters and 213 illustrations.
A wonderfully researched, well-written history of Henry Gassaway Davis’ central West Virginia coal line completed in 1905 and merged into the B&O in 1917. This tremendously detailed account provides a great history of interest to railfans, those interested in coal mining, West Virginia mountain railroading and regional history. Information on the Coal and Coke was scarce and photos virtually unknown.
This edition has many photos, maps and drawings, most previously unpublished. This book is the definitive work on the subject, drawing information from contemporary sources and most particularly from Davis’ own correspondence and files. Parts of the Coal and Coke still exist to this day, and this history is complete through the beginning of 2002. Fans of the B&O will like the well-documented section on the line in its years of service, as well as the equipment that went on to serve the B&O.
