West Virginia & Pittsburg Railway: A Western Maryland Predecessor

by  Alan Clarke

Paperback, 190 pages

8.5 x 11

More than 200 black and white and color illustrations.

Beginning as a narrow gauge line in 1880 and changing its name and gauge in 1881, this line opened the rich mining and timber regions of northern West Virginia at the turn of the 20th Century, creating such towns as Elkins, Thomas, and Davis and igniting and explosion in mining and lumbering industries. It connected the C&O at Durbin after 1900, and was sold to the Gould interests in 1902, becoming an important part of the Western Maryland in 1905.

Clarke’s extensive research from original sources gives this book an authenticity lacking in many railroad books. Illustrated with hundreds of great photos and maps, the story is taken down to present day CSX operations over these lines. With more than 200 black and white and color illustrations this book will delight those with interests in mountain railroading, lumbering, coal mines and West Virginia railroads.
