A member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame,
Albert Goodwell Spalding is remembered as "the premier
pitcher of the 1870s and an organizational genius
during baseball's formative years." A. G. Spalding
played professional baseball with the Boston Red Stockings
and the Chicago White Stockings. In 1876, Spalding
founded what would become an iconic sporting goods
business in Chicago and pitched 47 victories for the
Chicago White Stockings of the NL. Spalding's company
standardized early baseballs and developed the
modern baseball bat.
In addition to manufacturing and selling sports
equipment, the Spalding firm produced a memorable
series of sports-themed publications.
