Directed by ex-Beverly Hillbillies star Max Baer from a script by Herman Raucher (Summer of '42), Ode to Billy Joe was shot on location in Chickasaw country, midway between Jackson and Memphis, near the backwoods of Gentrys childhood. She newly recorded her beloved ballad (which sold an amazing 23-million records) to augment a flavorful score by two-time Academy Award@ winner Michel Legrand (Summer of '42, Yentl).
