A Troubled Land In the 2,000 years from the time of Abraham to King Herod the Great, the Holy Land experienced periods of triumph and strife, of independence and subjugation to foreign rule. At the time of Jesus, Palestine was part of the huge Roman Empire. Classes and Masses Through his vast building programs and his friendship with Rome's rulers, Herod changed the look of cities, and erected fortresses and strongholds. Artisans and builders became a new and powerful class, the laborers the new poor. Village Life Life in small towns followed ancient patterns. The seasons dictated the rituals and rites of daily life. Farmers and their families adhered to age-old traditions as fathers and mothers passed on their skills and heritage to their children. Jerusalem, the Holy City The symbol and seat of Judaism from the time of King David was Jerusalem. Over the centuries, this hilltop settlement became a cosmopolitan city with palaces and fortresses, dominated by the magnificent Temple built by Herod on the Temple Mount. The Life of the Mind Teachers occupied a special place in the community, for they preserved learning and passed it on to the young. Knowledge of religion and the law and adherence to their precepts were the foundation of society. Trade and Travel The lands bordering the Mediterranean carried on a vigorous trade both in staples and luxury items. The sea routes were the channels by which new ideas were spread from place to place. Religious Conflict Many sects, the Pharisees and the Sadducees among them, argued fine points of the law and vied for power. Religious leaders like John the Baptist roused the people by proclaiming the coming of the Savior. The Mission of the Messiah Although his ministry lasted but a few short years, Jesus' influence was profound. The story of those years begins with the temptation in the desert and ends with his death and resurrection. Portfolio: Jesus' life and death in art. Spread of the Gospel Upon Jesus' death, his message was carried throughout the Holy Land and beyond by the Apostle Paul and others. Christianity became a new force in the Roman Empire.
