ABOUT THE BOOK:
Hollywood Babylon is a book by avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger which details the sordid scandals of many famous and infamous Hollywood denizens from the 1900s to the 1950s. First published in the US in 1965, it was banned ten days later and would not be republished until 1975.
Upon its second release, The New York Times said of it, "If a book such as this can be said to have charm, it lies in the fact that here is a book without one single redeeming merit."[2]
Originally published in French in 1959 by J.J. Pauvert (Paris, France) as Hollywood Babylone,[3] the first U.S. edition of Hollywood Babylon was published in 1965 by Associated Professional Services of Phoenix, Arizona.[4] A second U.S. edition was published byRolling Stone's Straight Arrow Press and distributed by Simon and Schuster, released in 1975 after a series of copyright conflicts.[5]
The book details the stories of Hollywood stars from the silent film era to stars of the 1960s including stories about Lupe Vélez,Rudolph Valentino, Olive Thomas, Thelma Todd, Frances Farmer, Juanita Hansen, Mae Murray, Alma Rubens, Barbara La Marr, andMarilyn Monroe. Hollywood Babylon also featured chapters on the Fatty Arbuckle"Virginia Rappe scandal, the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the Hollywood Blacklist, the murder of Sharon Tate, and the Confidential magazine lawsuits. The book has been responsible for several urban legends, mostly about the silent film stars it covered. Hollywood Babylon II was published in 1984.[14] It was greatly expanded in format but was not as well received as the first book. It covered stars from the 1920s to the 1970s. Anger stated for years he intended to write a Hollywood Babylon III,[5] and in a 2010 interview he told that it had been finished but was placed on hold.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Kenneth Anger (born Kenneth Wilbur Anglemeyer; February 3, 1927) is an American underground experimental filmmaker, actor and author of two controversial Hollywood Babylon books. Working exclusively in short films, he has produced almost forty works since 1937, nine of which have been grouped together as the "Magick Lantern Cycle", and form the basis of Anger's reputation as one of the most influential independent filmmakers in cinema history.
Anger's reputation is as one of the most influential independent filmmakers in cinema history.[1] His films variously merge surrealism with homoeroticism and the occult, and have been described as containing "elements of erotica, documentary, psychodrama, and spectacle".[2] Anger himself has been described as "one of America's first openly gay filmmakers, and certainly the first whose work addressed homosexuality in an undisguised, self-implicating manner", and his "role in rendering gay culture visible within American cinema, commercial or otherwise, is impossible to overestimate.
For twenty years from the early 1980s, Anger released no new material. In 2000 he released Don't Smoke That Cigarette, followed a year later by The Man We Want to Hang. In 2004, he began showing Anger Sees Red, a short surrealistic film .
Anger makes an appearance in the 2008 feature documentary by Nik Sheehan about Brion Gysin and the Dreamachine titled FLicKeR.[87] In 2009 his work was featured in a retrospective exhibition at the MoMA PS1 in New York City,[88] and the following year a similar exhibition took place in London.[89]
Kenneth Anger has finished writing Hollywood Babylon III, but has not yet published it, fearing severe legal repercussions if he did so...
