" Foreword to the First Edition

The last decade witnessed a number of extremely
interesting and impressive achievements in flying.
Among these we can cite the successful completion,
in less than two days, of non-stop flights around the
world, with refuleing in the air. Further, supersonic
aeroplanes have carried men at more than 2,000 miles
per hour and there are reasons to believe that this
speed will be doubled around 1960 or so, and that within
the next decade man will be flying over 100 miles above the
surface of the earth and perhaps inaugurating space travel.

These and several other flights represent some of the most
brilliant and spectacular achievements of human genious.

Much less spectacular, yet equally important and with
at least as great a promise for the future, has been
the development of the helicopter during this period.
This modest newcomer to the family of flying craft
started its career by saving tens of thousands of lives
under conditions of war as well as in peacetime emergencies.
