Located in Moundsville, West Virginia, and built in 1866, this prison fortress has a dark and deadly history. The Cincinnati Enquirer dubbed it ‘Hell on Earth’ in 1886. Prisoners called it “Bloody Alley” and it ranked on the nation’s “Most Violent Prison” list for many years. The Pen housed thousands of inmates in its 109 years of operation and executed a total of 94 men. Reports of torture devices and cruel and unusual treatment surfaced in the early years of the prison making this a very deadly place to “Do Hard Time”.
