High-priced psychiatrist Dr. Ray Fleming (Gene Barry) knows he has committed the perfect murder. He's absolutely certain that nobody can catch him - certainly not the unkempt Los Angeles police detective investigating the slaying of Fleming's wife (Nina Foch). But the supremely confident Dr. Fleming will be the first of many arrogant killers to make the mistake of underestimating shaggy Lieutenant Columbo.
Prescription: Murder is the TV movie that introduced Peter Falk as TV's unlikeliest detective hero. Although Falk is completely identified with the wrinkled role, he was not the first actor to play Columbo. Veteran character actor Bert Freed played the wily detective in Enough Rope, an early '60s episode of Chevy Mystery Show. When mystery masters Richard Levinson and William Link turned Enough Rope into a stage play titled Prescription: Murder. Oscar-winner Thomas Mitchell (Stagecoach) played Columbo. Falk wasn't even Levinson and Link's first choice when they turned their play into a TV movie. They suggested Bing Crosby or Lee J. Cobb. Fortunately for mystery fans, neither was available.
The Seminal Columbo mystery, Prescription: Murder established the delightful pattern for the sloppy supersleuth: an open mystery (one where we see the murder committed), numerous references to his unseen wife, the cigar, trademark lines ("one detail that bothers me... one more thing") and, of course, the raincoat. Interestingly enough, Levinson and Link's script put Columbo in an overcoat, Falk thought it said raincoat, so he brought in one he had purchased on 57th Street during a rainy New York day in 1967. "I have great affection for it." says Falk.
Ironically, Levinson and Link at first believed that the murderer, Ray Fleming was the central character. In a moment of incredible understatement, Dick Levinson said, "We did't realize how effective the cop character would be."
