How did so many French art pieces end up in the Heritage Museum in Russia? Two individuals, Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, known for their early appreciation of impressionist and post-impressionist art were responsible for amassing a large amount of art pieces that were eventually to become a part of the Heritage museum. It was to happen, but not before a great deal of pain and anguish. Both individuals were divested of all their art holdings by the new Soviet government. The paintings, many looked upon as detrimental to the new soviet cause were destroyed or locked away until the later 1940's when they were allowed to be put on exhibit at the State Heritage Museum. (The State Hermitage Museum is St. Petersburg's most popular visitor attraction, and one of the world's largest and most prestigious museums.. With over 3 million items in its collection, one estimate has it that you would need eleven years to view each exhibit on display for just one minute.)
