Item Description

  • This stamp was issued by Germany in 1958 with the designation as a stamp with different watermarks, one is horizontal and the other is vertical.  But, just what is a "watermark" and why is it important in stamp collecting?

Stamps can have watermarks that depict a variety of symbols, such as crowns or other national symbols as well as the single and double line marks on US stamps.

  • Watermark detection
To detect a watermark, you can hold the stamp up to a light or place it against a dark background and apply a watermark fluid. The paper will be thinner where the image is impressed, and the fluid will soak into the paper to reveal the watermark. You can use a small black tray and hydrocarbon fluid, which won't damage the stamp's ink or gum and will evaporate off when it's dry. Some philatelists prefer lighter fluid, but it's flammable and has an unpleasant smell, so it should be used sparingly in enclosed spaces. You should only use substances that are specifically made for use with stamps, as others could damage or destroy them.
  • Watermark errors

Watermarks can sometimes be produced by accident, such as when a sheet of paper is fed into the printing press upside down, resulting in an "inverted watermark". Other errors can include sideways watermarks, which can be found on booklet stamps and some higher denomination stamps.
