The East German uprising of June 17th, 1953 was a peaceful protest that began in East Berlin and spread across the german Democratic Republic (GDR). The uprising was a response to the government's economic policies, which included raising work quotas and the price of groceries, and promoting heavy industry over consumer goods. The protests turned violent when Soviet and East German military force put down the rioting, resulting in many deaths and injuries. (Info compliments of Google)
