Prince Edward Island was the last of the British colonies in North America to adopt a decimal currency system. During this conversion, in 1871, the Island chose the dollar as its monetary unit, to which it gave a value equivalent to that of the gold dollar issued in the United States. The decimal base system thus created resembled that which had first been adopted by the provinces of Canada, New Brunswick, then the Dominion of Canada in 1867. This one cent coin, dated 1871, was the only one decimal-based coin minted for use by Prince Edward Island before it joined Confederation in 1873.
The design and engraving of this lovely coin is by Leonard C. Wyon, who for about forty years was chief engraver of the Royal Mint in London. The obverse is decorated with a portrait of the Queen wearing a tiara, a design already used for the Jamaican halfpenny. The reverse, which is reproduced here, is an adaptation of the official seal of the Island. The central motif of the coin features a large oak tree (representing the United Kingdom) surrounded by three other smaller oak trees (the three countries of the Island), and below which is inscribed the Latin legend PARVA SUB INGENTI (The small safe from the big one). Under the influence of urgent priorities for minting other coins, the Royal Mint had to call on the Heaton Mint of Birmingham (a private company) to mint the Prince Island pennies. Edward. The sample reproduced here is part of the National Currency Collection, Bank of Canada.
