Zinnia (Zinnia Elegans Lilliput Mix) - Perfect for the front yard flower border, grow this semi-dwarf variety from seed. It readily grows from flower seed, and it produces hardy plants that will do well in all types of weather. Blooming in shades of pink, yellow, white and red, these flowers will blossom 6 - 8 weeks . This dwarf variety features a wide range of brilliant colors and double 1 inch round pompon-like blooms.
Zinnia Lilliput are the perfect size for container plantings or grow them in the front of the flower border. They prefer full sun and well-draining soil. Hummingbirds love them, but thankfully, deer do not bother them! Deadhead spent flowers to encourage blooms, water moderately, fertilize with a liquid balanced fertilizer 1 - 2 times during their long bloom season. They are low maintenance flowers that reward you with a spectacular show of color!
For the earliest blooms, sow Zinnia flower seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeds before planting out. Using starter trays or small pots, press the Zinnia seed into the soil and lightly cover with peat moss or sand. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet until germination occurs. Don't transplant the young Zinnia plants too soon. Harden them off for 10 days or so as they are sensitive to cold.
Or, after frost season has ended, directly sow Zinnia flower seed outdoors in a prepared seedbed with loosened, weed free soil. Sow the Zinnia seed in rows 12 inches apart, spacing seeds every 4 inches.
